New Listing Star Axis Tours This series of tours is a program of the six-month long Land/ART New Mexico project. Star Axis is a monumental earth sculpture by artist Charles Ross that is located near Anton Chico, NM (about 2 ½ hours from Albuquerque, north of Santa Rosa). More than 120-feet high, the sculpture is precisely aligned with the Earth’s axis, providing the visitor a focus on celestial time. The artist will provide a guided tour. Reservations: Because the site is located on private land only a limited number of visitors can be accommodated at any one time so early reservations are recommended. The UNM Art Museum is closed for renovations that will add 8,000 square feet to its operation. The expanded space will be connected by a 3-story elevator and will include a new print and photography study room, video and new media gallery, administrative offices and storage for the museum’s extensive permanent collection. The Jonson Gallery will occupy the Lower Level Gallery, providing a larger space and other amenities.
Prior to its grand opening in February 2010, the Museum will participate in “LAND/ART New Mexico” with two exhibitions opening in September 2009.
The Jonson Gallery, currently located at 1909 Las Lomas NE on the UNM campus, is open by appointment only until the move. To make an appointment, call the Curator at 277-8927 or the Art Museum at 277-4001.
